Book Peter Mertens (1/3): The Militarization of Germany and European Imperialism

Saturday, 11th of July - 10:00 - 13:00

Peter Mertens

Language: Dutch (translation provided)

Eight decades of military restraint are thrown out the window: Germany and Europe are resolutely choosing rearmament. Behind the rhetoric of 'strategic autonomy' lies an old truth: economic dominance must be anchored militarily. Peter Mertens dissects how European imperialism is getting a new guise, from the Red Sea to the Indo-Pacific. Come discover how to break this logic of power.

This training is part of a three-part series at the Marxist Summer School on the new book The Last Days of the Old Normal (EPO, 2026). This session covers the first part of his book.

Peter Mertens is general secretary of the PTB/PVDA and a leading voice on the European left on militarization, peace and socialism. He previously wrote Mutiny (EPO, 2023), an international bestseller translated into seven languages. His latest book, The Last Days of the Old Normal, was published by EPO in May and will be released in English in 2027.
