Socialist healthcare systems are often sidelined in current debates on improving healthcare and health policies. Yet the organization of healthcare in countries like the German Democratic Republic (GDR/East Germany) should be considered an important source of inspiration. Indeed, the GDR improved access to healthcare, opened health professions to the working class and peasants, and promoted international cooperation to strengthen health systems throughout the Global South.
