Socialist healthcare systems are often sidelined in current debates on improving healthcare and health policies. Yet the organization of healthcare in countries like the German Democratic Republic (GDR/East Germany) should be considered an important source of inspiration. Indeed, the GDR improved access to healthcare, opened health professions to the working class and peasants, and promoted international cooperation to strengthen health systems throughout the Global South.

Max Rodermund is a researcher at Tricontinental Institute and primarily researches and writes about the history of socialism in the German Democratic Republic (DDR) and its impact on the world, including in the areas of agriculture, health care, and democracy, as well as the anti-imperialist strategy of the socialist camp. As part of his research, Max conducts interviews with former citizens of the DDR and other key figures who had first-hand experience with the country.
